If you have a high schooler or college student who is currently trying to figure out what they want to do for the rest of their life, Fiverr.com is a wonderful place to do some career exploration for students, young adults, or even older adults in career transition – to test the waters by doing smaller projects for entrepreneurs hungry for fresh ideas and talent.
How my high school client inspired me to talk about this: I am giving college and career counseling and guidance to a high schooler here in Tucson, and during our work he told me he had been getting paid to do some graphic artwork for several companies. Given his strong interest in graphic art, he decided to do some “pilot testing” of what it would be like to actually get paid to do graphic artistry.
And he was able to build his work portfolio without getting “hired” by any company. Rather, by going on Fiverr.com, he was able to do some career exploration by looking for graphic art opportunities that were within his level of current level of competence.
Fiverr.com easily lends itself to those who already have a “day job” but also are wanting to transition into their “dream job” by building a portfolio over time. This is a great website for career counselors or for those conducting in-depth vocational guidance.
WARNING: One of the key reasons people do not find a lifelong career and instead switch careers commonly is they do not do enough “field testing” before they settle on a career. This leads to them investing a huge amount of time and money into training for a certain career before they have deep enough intelligence to ensure that career will be sustainably lifelong.
Fiverr.com offers people the refreshing chance to go to a global marketplace of “lean” (i.e., smaller scale or start-ups) entrepreneurs looking for people who will do projects for them. This gives people around the globe the opportunity to be a consultant and test their talents in areas they envision developing a career in.
Just for the record, the Fiverr.com organization describes itself as “the world’s largest freelance services marketplace for lean entrepreneurs to focus on growth & create a successful business at affordable costs.”
Welcome to the future of how lean entrepreneurs will be seeking fresh talent. Not in your dream job currently? Get on Fiverr.com and do some career exploration. Review projects that might help you move into your desired direction and help you get firmly planted in the right career area.
Your happiness may just depend on it!
